About Stainton

This picturesque South Yorkshire village was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but there is considerable evidence that it existed as a settlement long before 1086.

It is a pleasant, friendly village, hemmed in by a rural landscape. Its features include St. Winifred's Church, a lovely stone building with a sturdy tower adorned with pinnacles. The church stands at the centre of a grassed churchyard where visitors can see an ancient stone memorial cross, as well as tombs and graves from several centuries.

Stainton also has that "hub" of village life, a warmly welcoming village inn, The Three Tuns, which can be found in Stainton Lane at the edge of the village. At the opposite end of Stainton Lane there is a pretty stream and duck pond.

This is a well cared for village, its leafy lanes show a variety of properties, all with well tended gardens bright with lovely bedding, bushes, trees and often with glorious foliage creeping up old stone walls. The villagers work tirelessly to keep the village looking fresh, and your eye's are constantly drawn towards flower filled tubs and hanging baskets, or to the brightly painted, still in use, red telephone box!

Stainton has all the usual village amenities, and can be found lying in a quiet location close to Tickhill, just above the market town of Maltby. The nearest large town for shopping is Rotherham, which has a museum depicting the life and times of this part of the South Yorkshire landscape.
